Achille
Castiglione
Achille Castiglione (1918-2002) Italian architect and designer, active Milan; brother of Pier Giacomo and Livio Castiglione.

Simultaneously playful and disciplined, his work displays a sophisticated humor, yet never belies the underlying intellect and training of its creator. In the tradition of Marcel Duchamp, Achille Castiglione's pieces frequently employ found objects such as the bicycle and tractor seats appropriated for his famous Mezzadro (1957) and Sella (1958) stools.

Himself a seven-time recipient of the Compasso D’Oro, he displayed a passionate interest in technology throughout his career, designing one of the first halogen ceiling lighting fixtures, and often including moveable parts or retractable mechanisms in his pieces. The elegant Arco lamp (1962) is a confirmed design icon.
